Following her parents' example, Sandra Deal chose teaching as a profession. She graduated from what is now Georgia College and State University at Milledgeville.
Mrs. Deal has since retired from education and devotes her time to being a partner in her husband's public service and an active grandmother.
The first lady and her husband, Governor Nathan Deal, met on a blind date as college students. They have been married for 43 years and have four grown children and six grandchildren.
