Economic, Human Services & Workforce Division
The NGA Center for Best Practices' Economic, Human Services & Workforce (EHSW) Division focuses on best practices, policy options, and service delivery improvements across a range of current and emerging issues, including economic development and innovation, workforce development, employment services, research and development policies, and human services for children, youth, low-income families, and people with disabilities.
The NGA Center for Best Practices’ Education Division provides information, research, policy analysis, technical assistance and resource development for governors and their staff in the areas of early childhood, K-12 and postsecondary education. The division is currently focusing on a number of key policy issues relevant to governors’ efforts to develop and support the implementation of policy, including: birth to 3rd grade access, readiness and quality; the Common Core State Standards, STEM and related assessments; teacher and leader effectiveness; turning around low-performing schools; high school redesign; competency-based learning; charter schools; and postsecondary (higher education & workforce training) access, success and affordability. The division is also working on policy issues related to bridging the system divides between the early childhood, K-12 and postsecondary systems.
Environment, Energy & Transportation Division
The NGA Center for Best Practices’ Environment, Energy & Transportation (EET) Division identifies best practices and provides technical assistance on issues including energy planning, policies and programs, energy, transportation, and infrastructure financing; building a modern energy workforce; transportation and land use planning; and clean up and stewardship of nuclear weapons sites.
The NGA Center for Best Practices' Health Division covers a broad range of health financing, service delivery, and policy issues, including containing health care costs, health insurance trends and innovations, state initiatives in public health, aging and long-term care, disease management and health care information technology, health care quality, mental health and substance abuse, and health workforce.
Homeland Security & Public Safety Division
The NGA Center for Best Practices Homeland Security & Public Safety Division (HSPS) supports governors' homeland security and criminal justice policy advisors. This work includes supporting the Governors' Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) and providing technical assistance to a network of governors' criminal justice policy advisors. Issues include emergency preparedness, interoperability, cyber-crime and cyber-security, intelligence coordination, emergency management, sentencing and corrections, forensics, and justice information technology.
