The National Governors Association released an issue brief and paper to help states realize the full potential of programs to reduce energy use through innovative approaches to building customer demand. Enhancing State Energy Efficiency Efforts Through Information and Outreach to Consumers shows how state policies and programs can help drive participation in energy efficiency programs through new marketing techniques and maximize energy savings through changes in consumer behavior. Strategies highlighted in the paper include:
- Providing consumers with greater feedback on their energy use;
- Leveraging social norms and the power of competition; and
- Using messages and messengers with the most appeal to customers.
