As part of the 2011-2012 Chair’s Initiative on Growing State Economies, the National Governors Association is hosting four regional summits across the country. The third regional summit was held in Seattle, Washington on January 24-25, 2012.

On January 10-11, 2012, the National Governors Association held a workshop for governors’ energy and economic advisors to discuss the latest best practices for economic development in the clean energy sector.

The NGA Center Federal Facilities Task Force (FFTF) met for the 10th Intergovernmental Meeting with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The National Governors Association hosted a National Summit on Government Redesign in Arlington, VA on December 13-14. The summit allowed state teams to learn about best practices and share experiences around efforts to reform and streamline state government.

On December 8-9, 2011, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices held a workshop for governors’ energy and economic advisors to discuss the latest best practices in states’ economic development in the clean energy sector.

The NGA Center hosted a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Summit to provide states with an opportunity to cultivate strategies for increasing student and worker STEM skills.

NGA Center for Best Practices hosted a webinar on December 6, 2011, on Understanding How Data Capacity Relates to Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Efforts.

The NGA Center for Best Practices hosted a Policy Academy on State Strategies to Evaluate Teacher Effectiveness December 1-2, 2011, to provide states with an opportunity to develop and plan for the implementation of rigorous statewide teacher evaluation systems.

In 2014, states will be permitted to offer a BHP to certain individuals instead of offering subsidies for participation in the insurance exchange. The discussion focused on the financial, policy and operational assessments states will need to make in determining whether to pursue the BHP

The NGA Center hosted policy academy meeting on strengthening postsecondary accountability systems in Atlanta, GA on November 17-18. The workshop, open to the six states participating in the policy academy, focused on making efficiency and effectiveness a more significant part of state-level accountability systems.

NGA Center, with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, hosted its annual Institute for Governors Criminal Justice Policy Advisors in Annapolis, Maryland.

With support from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the NGA Center, is working with five states – Alabama, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia – to develop a standardized justice information sharing system that will allow state agencies to share information.

The NGA Center hosted a meeting for states interested in state policy strategies for early dropout prevention. The state team members learned from experts and researchers and shared information across states.

The NGA Center co-hosted a meeting for states interested in learning more about evaluating school principals. This was a join meeting with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

The NGA Center hosted an Experts Roundtable on Economic Development in the Clean Energy Sector to inform a series of regional policy workshops for governors’ energy and economic advisors on best practices and lessons learned regarding pursuing economic development through clean energy markets.

The NGA Center, in partnership with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Center for Excellence in Project Finance at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), hosted a Workshop on Public-Private Partnerships for Transportation to assist state teams in exploring how P3s—contractual agreements between states and private sector entities—might be used to enhance the delivery and management of transportation infrastructure and get a better appreciation for the tradeoffs with public sector approaches.

This webinar provided an overview of the pediatrician workforce, including the pool of general pediatricians and the shortages that affect many pediatric subspecialties.

The NGA Center hosted a meeting for states interested in state policy strategies for improving state policies that address teacher evaluation. The state team members learned from experts and researchers and shared information across states.

The NGA Center convened ten states, representing nearly 80 percent of U.S. coal production, to participate in a State Policy Study Group on Advanced Coal and Carbon Capture and Storage.

To support states in their efforts to better understand energy trends, the NGA Center supports the State Energy Learning Network (ELN). The ELN provides states with a forum, comprised of monthly webinars, to hear from experts and discuss energy policies and opportunities, as well as share and showcase state best practices.

This meeting brought together governors’ education, workforce, and economic development policy advisors to discuss state strategies to improve productivity and competitiveness. State teams heard from national experts, shared best practices, and networked with colleagues across the three policy domains.
