July 13-15, 2006 | Berkeley, California

The goal of the NGA Policy Academy on Transitioning Youth Out of Foster Care was for participating states to develop comprehensive programs and policies to ensure that youth leaving foster care have the supports and skills to successfully enter adulthood.

During this Academy, state participants had the opportunity to work with renowned researchers and national and state experts to begin to develop an action plan for improving services. Participants spent a substantial portion of the meeting working in state teams with the help of facilitators to clarify desired outcomes, devise strategies for achieving those outcomes, identify short-term actions, and begin to develop an implementation plan. Participating teams brought with them a wealth of knowledge and experience, and there was ample opportunity to interact with, and learn from, each other.
