Overview

American society is rapidly adapting to changes brought on by the information technology revolution. Governors are bringing the advantages of the new technologies to the business functions of state agencies. The Internet is becoming the focal point for redesigning state government and providing better information and services to citizens.

• The best state web sites focus on the needs and preferences of users and offer the same kinds of customer conveniences found on private-sector web sites.
• There's much more to going online than meets the eye. Transforming state agency operations to exploit the potential of the web for customer satisfaction and business efficiency is a major undertaking requiring financial, managerial, and technical resources.
• Electronic information and transactions are spawning new public/private business models for states. New technology and the need for speed and expertise make public/private partnerships indispensable.

Focus of Center Activities

Center activities in IT help governors to:

• Meet customer expectations for on-line access to information and transactions.
• Enhance economic competitiveness by using on-line services to attract business to the state.
• Improve public services by sharing information in a timely manner through integrated technology systems in public safety, natural resources, transportation, social services, education, and healthcare.

Currently, the Center has projects to promote the electronic sharing of information in the criminal justice arena; improve the ability for first responders to communicate using interoperable systems; provide guidance to governors on IT management, organization, and procurement; and promote best practices in on-line privacy policy and cybersecurity.
