 State Green Economy Profiles
States' emerging green economies are diverse and widespread. To varying degrees, the profiles show every state is witnessing growth in at least one green industry segment, and more often than not, this business growth stems from existing strengths in the state.

Governors from across the country are looking at ways they can help build a green economy in their states. They see an opportunity to create jobs and diversify their state economy but also see an opportunity to create a more sustainable electricity system, a greener transportation network and a less-carbon intensive industry sector. As states move forward in their efforts, however, they are facing a range of analytical challenges, policy questions and financing issues. Meanwhile, there is $80 billion inside the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and training for green jobs, that states have the opportunity to utilize. Two NGA Center divisions – the Social, Economic, Workforce Programs Division and the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Division – are working to help states address key questions, identify cross-cutting strategies, and share best practices. This work focuses on helping states understand the green economy, identify and develop policy and financing options and think comprehensively. |
