Governors are responding to the foreclosure crisis by taking action in three main areas: foreclosure mitigation, to reduce the number of families losing their homes; neighborhood stabilization, to prevent areas with multiple foreclosed homes from falling into disarray; and foreclosure prevention, to protect against future housing crises.

Emerging Trends: State Efforts to Respond to the Foreclosure Crisis (2009 NGA Center Report)
In 2008 alone, governors of 33 states enacted at least 70 new pieces of legislation to address the foreclosure crisis. This report explores the latest state actions to keep families in their homes, stabilize neighborhoods, and prevent future foreclosures.

"State Actions to Address Foreclosures" (2007 NGA Center Issue Brief)
This Issue Brief examines the actions governors and states have taken in response to the foreclosure crisis. The brief includes a Mortgage Lending Primer and examines state policies to mitigate and prevent foreclosures.
