War(s) Served: World War I REDFIELD PROCTOR JR. was born in Proctor, Vermont. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering, he entered the production department of the Vermont Marble Company, which his father had founded. He rose to the position of vice president of the company and served as well as president of the Proctor Trust Company. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Vermont Sanitarium founded by his father, and of several universities. He was elected to the state House in 1912 and 1915 and served as a state Senator in 1917. An enlistee in the Army during World War I, he rose to the rank of Captain. As governor, Proctor opposed the usurpation of local authority by the state, or state authority by the federal government.
