NEHEMIAH GREEN, the fourth governor of Kansas, was born in Grassy Point, Hardin County, Ohio on March 8, 1837. His education was attained at a subscription school in Logan County and at Ohio Wesleyan University. He moved with his brothers to Kansas in 1855, but two years later, he returned to Ohio, and established a career as a Methodist minister. Green served during the Civil War as a private in company B of the 89th Ohio Infantry. Due to poor health, he resigned from his military duty in 1863, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Green entered politics in 1866, serving as the lieutenant governor of Kansas, an office he held until 1868. On November 4, 1868, Governor Samuel J. Crawford resigned from office, and Green, who was lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He served in this capacity for sixty-nine days, carrying out the policies of the previous administration. After leaving the governor's office, Green was the presiding elder of the Manhattan district of the Methodist Church, serving from 1870 to 1871. He also was regent of the Kansas State Agricultural College from 1873 to 1874, and served as a member and speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives in 1880. After suffering from an earlier illness that had plagued him in the military, Governor Nehemiah Green passed away on January 12, 1890. He was buried at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas.
