PATRICK JOSEPH LUCEY was born March 21, 1918, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1946. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in the Caribbean Theatre of World War II, from 1941 to 1945. Lucey was a justice of the peace from 1946 to 1950, a member of the state assembly from 1949 to 1951, and lieutenant governor from 1965 to 1967. He was elected governor in 1970 and reelected in 1974. He was a member of the National Governors' Conference Executive Committee from 1973 to 1974. He resigned as governor in 1977 to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, a position he held until 1979. He was the Independent candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1980.
