ARTHUR J. WEAVER, the twenty-third governor of Nebraska, was born near Falls City, Nebraska, on November 18, 1873. His education was attained at Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania, and at the University of Nebraska, where he earned an undergraduate degree in 1895 and a law degree in 1896. He then established his legal career in his hometown of Falls City. Weaver first entered politics as a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, a position he held in 1899. He served as the Falls City attorney from 1899 to 1901; was the attorney for Richardson County from 1901 to 1903; and served as councilman of Falls City from 1910 to 1916. He also served as the mayor of Falls City in 1916; was president of the Nebraska Constitutional Convention from 1919 to 1920; and served as chairman of the 1920 Nebraska Electoral College, as well as president of the 1924 Republican State Convention. Weaver next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in November 1928. During his tenure the state bank guarantee system was eliminated and a biennial state budget program was initiated. After running unsuccessfully for reelection, Weaver continued to stay active in politics. In 1932 he served as the Nebraska chairman to the Republican National Convention. He also served as president of the Nebraska State Historical Society from 1939 to 1941, and was an unsuccessful U.S. senatorial candidate in 1940. Governor Arthur J. Weaver passed away on October 17, 1945, and was buried in the Steele Cemetery in Falls City, Nebraska.
