GEORGE ALLEN was born in Whittier, California. He attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated with distinction in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in history and earned his law degree in 1977. He later established his own law practice in Charlottesville. He was first elected to public office as a state representative in 1983 and held the seat in the Virginia House of Delegates for nine years. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election on November 5, 1991. He was elected governor two years later. His focuses included reforms of the juvenile justice and welfare systems. He also emphasized economic growth and encouraged new business in Virginia. Allen was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000.
