STANLEY K. HATHAWAY was born July 19, 1924, in Osceola, Nebraska. He was adopted upon his mother's death by Franklin E. and Velma Hathaway. Hathaway graduated from Huntley High School and promptly entered the University of Wyoming. His education was interrupted by his U.S. Army Air Force service in World War II. Hathaway received the French Croix de Guerre, Presidential Unit Citations and five Air Medals. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a B.A. in 1948 and a LL.B. in 1950. He then went to Torrington, Wyoming to start his law practice. Hathaway was elected to two terms as governor in 1966 and 1970. During his tenure, Governor Hathaway chaired the Western Governors' Conference from 1970 to 1971 and he served on the National Governors' Conference Executive Committee from 1968 to 1969. Appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Gerald Ford in June 1975, Hathaway resigned the next month due to ill health.
