SAMUEL B. MOORE was born in Davidson County, North Carolina, which is present day Franklin County, Tennessee. As a young child, he moved with his parents Matthew and Letita Moore to Jackson County, Alabama. Moore, who had a limited education, became a planter in Alabama. In 1823 he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives and was a member of the Alabama Senate from 1828 to 1831. He was serving as president of the senate in March 1831, when Governor Gabriel Moore, resigned from office to take a seat in the U.S. Senate. During his short time as governor, Moore was mainly concerned with carrying out the policies his brother had started.  This included the startup of the state's first railroad and the opening of the University of Alabama. He was an avid supporter of the State Bank of Alabama and was opposed to nullification. Moore ran for reelection in 1831, but was defeated soundly by John Gayle. After leaving office in November 1831, Moore returned to his home in Pickens County, where he was elected again to the Alabama Senate from 1834 to 1838. He later served as judge in the Pickens County Court (1835-1841). He died on November 7, 1846, and is buried at Carrollton City Cemetery, Carrollton, Alabama.
