ADAM McMULLEN, the twenty-second governor of Nebraska, was born in Wellsville, New York, on June 12, 1872. His education was attained at the University of Nebraska, where he graduated in 1896, and at George Washington University, where he earned a law degree in 1899. He then established his legal career in Wymore, Nebraska. McMullen first entered politics as a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, a position he won election to in 1904 and 1906. He also served as mayor of Wymore, and won election to the Nebraska State Senate in 1916. McMullen next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in November 1924. He was reelected to a second term in 1926. During his tenure, the state deficit was erased; farming and irrigation developments were advanced; the state highway system was improved; and the meadowlark became the state bird. After completing his term, McMullen continued to stay politically active. He served as the postmaster of Beatrice in 1932, and was a delegate to the 1932 Republican National Convention. Governor Adam McMullen passed away on March 2, 1959, and was buried in the Wymore Cemetery in Wymore, Nebraska.
