BRERETON C. JONES is a native of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in commerce. Within three years he became a successful real estate developer. He was married in the early 1970s and with his wife, he established the Airdrie Stud Farm in Kentucky, recognized internationally for its thoroughbred horses.

Jones won election as Kentucky's Lieutenant Governor in 1987 and as governor in 1991. Among his priorities as governor was environmental integrity. He also successfully promoted a state constitutional amendment to permit Kentucky governors and other statewide elected officials to serve two consecutive terms. Added to the amendment was a provision excluding all incumbents from making consecutive runs for office. Consequently, Jones left office after his single term, returning to the Airdrie farm.
