Overview Our nation's citizens have long looked to state government for the protection and support of our most vulnerable children, families and individuals and to offer opportunities for low-income families to achieve self-sufficiency and provide for their own well-being. Despite decreases in federal funding and tight state budgets, Governors continue to explore and implement new and innovative practices in serving families and children that will not only address pressing social issues but will do so in creative, cost-effective ways. The Center's Human Services Division provides up-to-date information and technical assistance to states so they can improve policies and reform systems to better help those most in need. Current human services policy initiatives at the NGA Center are focused on family economic success, at-risk youth (particularly those transitioning out of foster care), TANF reauthorization, child welfare and cross-systems innovation. |
