Oregon Consolidates Data Centers
Contact: Will Ware
Homeland Security & Technology Division

Oregon has announced that it has successfully completed the consolidation of 11 separate agency data systems into one state-operated facility. The new facility, State Data Center, provides a shared IT infrastructure to 45,000 state and local government personnel, as well as multiple agencies, businesses and government programs.

In addition to providing a unified technology network and easier access to information, additional benefits of the new State Data Center include:

  • Reduction in power consumption by 30 percent;
  • A decrease in server equipment and usage by 25 percent;
  • Better estimates in measuring power costs;
  • Improved cost containment;
  • Enhanced data security; and
  • An estimated cost saving of $10-12 million annually for the state.

State agencies involved in the data center consolidation include the Oregon State Police, Veteran’s Affairs, Transportation, Consumer and Business Services, Human Services, Forestry and Administrative Services. The consolidation is part of a greater state initiative that plans to revamp all IT services and adhere to certain federal government consolidation standards. During the next two years, Oregon expects to transition all IT functions and launch voice over IP (VoIP), end-to-end encryption and other communication and security enhancements.
