Connecticut Proposes a “Middle College” System Estimated to Save Millions
Contact: Angela Baber
Education Division

As part of her proposed state budget, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell has proposed a merger of Connecticut’s technical high schools and community colleges. The governor’s budget director estimates that this effort would save the state $4 million over the next two years. This merger would create a new “middle college” system through supporting 10,000 technical school students by offering them free college courses and training for careers that would meet state labor needs in fields such as health care, early childhood programs, computer support, automotive technology and “green” technology.

Similar initiatives exist across states, some of which are included below.

This merger would put the technical high schools and community college system under the state Office of Workforce Competitiveness.
