The U.S. population is aging rapidly, with 10,000 adults turning 65 every day. As individuals age and live longer than ever before, the need for long-term services and supports (LTSS) will continue to grow. Addressing the needs of these populations relies heavily on state Medicaid programs, which together are the largest payer of LTSS in the U.S. To meet this challenge, it is critical that states learn from one another and implement sustainable strategies that can effectively manage the health and well-being of growing LTSS populations. To help facilitate exchange of ideas and identification of strategies, NGA Health will support governors and their state agencies as they design, develop and implement sustainable LTSS solutions in the following ways:
- Raising the profile of the critical need to address aging issues
- Providing technical assistance to support state strategy development and implementation
- Facilitating cross-state dialogue and learning opportunities
