Energy Workforce Development

There is a growing demand for skilled workers across a range of energy sector occupations, including work related to the oil and natural gas industries, electricity generation and transmission, renewable energy production, energy efficiency deployment and carbon capture and storage. This demand is expected to continue to grow as several factors play out including the retirement of baby-boomers employed in the electric power industry, the acceleration of new technologies and the continued push for increasing amount of cleaner energy resources. States are working to develop curriculum and certification programs, provide training and support workforce development for the energy sector as part of their overall effort to remain economically competitive.

The NGA Center examines state efforts to advance workforce development for clean energy jobs. The NGA Center has also helped states to develop and advance their workforce efforts in the area of building retrofits. Efforts to help states with workforce issues and challenges include:
