State Clean Energy Actions

States across the country are working to increase energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy and explore other clean energy resources as part of a diverse approach to meeting the nation’s energy needs. Every state is working to advance clean energy measures in one or more areas; however, there is not a one-size fits all approach. States modify programs to reflect their own context and capture new thinking. Clean energy efforts usually fall into the following categories: clean electricity; energy efficiency; green economic development; Lead by Example (greening state government facilities and operations); alternative fuels and vehicles; greenhouse gas emissions; and research and development. Actions can span a range of policy, regulatory and voluntary efforts.

The NGA Center continually tracks and profiles state clean energy actions to help states identify promising actions and best practices. This information is compiled in reports and data tables and presented in webinars and conference calls.

In addition, the NGA Center organizes conference calls and disseminates information to state policymakers taking part in two groups:

  • The Energy Learning Network (ELN) convenes monthly via conference call and webinars to discuss clean energy trends, new policy developments and state best practices. These forums feature expert speakers as well as state officials and help connect states to new research, policy ideas and emerging issues.
  • The Learning Network on State ‘Lead by Example’ Initiatives, which discusses ways states are pursuing clean energy and cost savings in their buildings, facilities and operations. Topics include: green power purchasing, green schools, clean energy finance and energy savings performance contracting.
