The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort to establish a single set of clear educational standards for English-language arts and mathematics that states can share and voluntarily adopt. Over the next few years, states will be taking the necessary actions to adopt these standards throughout all school districts. Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia committed to developing these standards. They are informed by the best available evidence and the highest state standards across the country and globe and developed in collaboration with teachers, parents, school administrators and experts. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce and that parents, teachers and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

The Common Core State Standards were released in June 2010. CCSSI is coordinated by the NGA Center and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The following documents give an overview of the initiative:
