Dear Speaker Boehner, Minority Leader Pelosi, Majority Leader McConnell and Minority Leader Reid:
This week funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will lapse unless Congress and the President resolve their policy differences.
Governors have long recognized that the nation’s outdated immigration system is not serving people or our economy and needs to be addressed at the federal level. At the same time, the services of DHS are critical to the nation and to state and local governments who are responding to and recovering from natural disasters and emergencies.
While we acknowledge the complexities of resolving immigration issues, we call on Congress and the Administration to find a solution to those issues and fund DHS to avoid any lapse in services.
