Return on Investment and Prevention

With national attention on transforming health care systems, governors and other state leaders are focused on finding interventions that improve population health and health care quality while reducing health care spending. In a series of papers titled Health Investments That Pay Off, the NGA Center for Best Practices examines how states can finance and deliver selected population health strategies that improve health outcomes and can demonstrate programmatic savings, or return on investment, within a short timeframe, potentially in less than five years. The series highlights the need to extend health services beyond a doctor’s office and into homes and communities in order to improve health through a more comprehensive approach while generating savings for states.
