Susan McKee

First Lady Susan McKee is a native Rhode Islander and has been an educator her entire career. Susan met now-Governor Dan McKee at Cumberland High School in an accounting class. Then Susan McGill, she was seated in alphabetical order next to Dan. Susan was a cheerleader and Dan a star on the high school’s basketball team; when they met they felt an immediate connection.

Susan McKee graduated from Rhode Island College and became a teacher in her hometown of Cumberland, Rhode Island where she worked for 25 years. Susan earned two Master’s degrees- one in elementary education and one in reading –as her career progressed. Although Dan McKee has served in public office for nearly 40 years, Dan McKee is often referred to as “Mrs. McKee’s husband” by the generations of students Susan taught in Cumberland.

Susan McKee became a part-time reading specialist at Highlander Charter School in Providence 10 years ago and continues to aid students with their reading skills. Susan resides in Cumberland with Dan and Dan’s 92-year-old mother, Helen Willa McKee. Susan and Dan have two adult children – Kara and Matthew.
