Kate Brown became the governor of Oregon on February 18, 2015, and was sworn in for her second term on January 2, 2017.

Brown grew up in Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned a law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Before being elected into public office, Brown practiced family and juvenile law and taught at Portland State University.

Brown was appointed to the state House of Representatives in 1991 and, after election to two more terms, was elected to the Oregon Senate. In 1998, she was chosen Senate Democratic leader and became the Senate majority leader in 2004. In 2008, Brown was elected Oregon secretary of state and was re-elected in 2012. While in this role, she championed policies that reduced bureaucratic red tape for Oregon businesses, strengthened transparency of political campaign contributions and, with passage of Oregon’s New Motor Voter law, put ballots in the hands of tens of thousands of new voters.

Brown resides in Salem with her husband Dan.

Dan Little became the first gentleman of Oregon when his wife, Governor Kate Brown, was sworn into office on February 18, 2015. A native of Boulder, Colorado, he graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a bachelor’s degree in forestry management.

Mr. Little enjoyed a long tenure with the U.S. Forest Service as a natural resources biologist from 1982 to 2015 when he retired. During his time there, Mr. Little worked on a variety of national forest projects and developed databases and Geographic Information Systems to inventory and analyze a wide range of natural resource conditions.

Mr. Little and Gov. Kate Brown were married in 1997, and they currently reside in Salem, Oregon. The first gentleman has two grown children, Jessie and Dylan.
