Abbott’s career in public service began in Houston, where he served as a state trial judge in the 129th District Court for three years. In 1995, then-Governor George W. Bush appointed Abbott to the Texas Supreme Court, where he served with distinction. He was elected attorney general of Texas in 2006 and was reelected in November 2010. As the state’s chief law enforcement official, Abbott made protecting Texas communities the focus of his tenure as attorney general.

Cecilia Abbott became first lady of Texas when her husband, Governor Greg Abbott, was sworn in as governor on January 20, 2015.

Mrs. Abbott was raised in San Antonio by parents who were both educators.  She attended the University of Texas in Austin for two years and subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in theology from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Mrs. Abbott  has worked as a teacher, vice principal and then principal at several schools across Texas. Mrs. Abbott was appointed to the State Board of Educator Certification, where she served from 2001 to 2008.

She also served as the managing director of community relations at Harden Healthcare, a network of senior adult health care facilities and services.
