Kathryn Helgaas Burgum became the first lady of North Dakota when her husband, Governor Doug Burgum, was sworn in as the 33rd governor of North Dakota on Dec. 15, 2016.

The first lady’s priority is supporting initiatives aimed at ending addiction in North Dakota’s communities. Mrs. Burgum has worked in human resources and marketing for more than 25 years in a variety of industries, including retail, printing, biotechnology, software, manufacturing and real estate development. She has donated her time and leadership to many charitable endeavors, including at-risk women and children, addiction and recovery, animal welfare and visionary artists and the arts.

Mrs. Burgum grew up in Jamestown, North Dakota. She earned her undergraduate degree in retail business from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in business administration, specializing in human resources, from the University of North Texas.

The first lady and Governor Burgum were married in 2016.
