State Technology & Policy Questions Around Highly Autonomous Vehicles

The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) hosted a webinar to explore the technology and policy developments surrounding highly autonomous vehicles (HAVs). As the development of self-driving cars and trucks advances, states are at the forefront of revising rules to advance technology deployment, ensure safe and responsible operation and support related economic development. Some seven states have passed legislation regarding testing or other aspects of HAV operation or development; at least another dozen states have proposed legislation while others are developing new regulations to address how this new technology will fit into the existing and future transportation system. This webinar looked at the status of technology and expectations for its development over the near term and then discussed with state experts the policy efforts taking place across the country.
