NGA Testifies Before Senate on FirstNet Implementation

Jeff McLeod, director of the NGA Center for Best Practices Homeland Security and Public Safety Division, testified before a Senate subcommittee on the public safety broadband network known as FirstNet, which sets aside a wireless spectrum for emergency communications.

In his remarks, McLeod said governors and NGA stand ready to work with the committee to ensure the successful implementation and deployment of a nationwide public safety broadband network for first responders. States have identified potential obstacles and challenges surrounding the implementation of FirstNet around issues of coverage, cost and consultation. Governors will weigh these and other factors as they decide whether to opt in or opt out of FirstNet.
