WASHINGTON—The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) Health Division hosted an event at the National Press Club to discuss its new report, Building Complex Care Programs: A Road Map for States.
NGA gathered health policy experts to discuss the road map and how to develop programs for complex care populations, those with complex health, behavioral health and social support needs who frequently use costly acute care and institutional settings in the absence of linkage to cost-effect, community-based solutions.
The panel included NGA Center Health Division Director Hemi Tewarson and Program Director Sandra Wilkniss, as well as James Becker, Medicaid Medical director, West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services; Matt Lori, deputy director, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services; and Natassia Rozario with the Camden Coalition.
The panel discussed state-level strategies to develop and support complex care programs which improve health and wellbeing of those served while reining in escalating health care costs. They provided real-world examples of how people’s lives were improved through cross-sector health, behavioral health and social support interventions such as permanent supportive housing and targeted care coordination, plus ways states like West Virginia and Michigan have pioneered in helping create more access to effective programs.
