Governors Taking Action by Leading by Example

Governors have the unique ability to reduce energy consumption in state-owned facilities through aggressive lead-by-example (LBE) targets. Energy use at state government facilities accounts for around 10 percent of a typical government’s annual operating budget (U.S. EPA). Governors are seeking to reduce inefficiencies and are succeeding by setting effective Executive Orders. Panelists from states with LBE executive orders will discuss the processes to set targets and meet energy reduction goals. Additionally, NGA highlights lessons learned in a recent LBE financing workshop that included over 40 participants from 17 states.
