John Carney was sworn in as the governor of Delaware on January 16, 2017.

Before serving as governor, Carney served as Delaware’s only member of Congress since 2011. Prior to Congress, Carney served two terms as Delaware’s lieutenant governor. Under Delaware Gov. Tom Carper, Carney served as secretary of finance and deputy chief of staff. Before that, he was deputy chief administrative officer for New Castle County, and served as staff for Sen. Joe Biden. In his roles, he has helped Delaware earn its first ever AAA bond rating, played a key role in the purchase of the Port of Wilmington, and worked to cut taxes nine times.

Carney was born in Wilmington. Both of his parents were educators. Carney earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Delaware. Carney currently lives in Wilmington with his wife, Tracey. They have two sons, Sam and Jimmy.
