2022 NGA Annual Summer Meeting

Portland, Maine | July 13-15th

NGA Chairman’s Welcome

As your NGA Chairman, I look forward to welcoming you to NGA’s 2022 Summer Meeting at the Westin Hotel in Portland, Maine, July 13–15. The meeting features a series of important presentations and conversations regarding our common concerns: expanding access to affordable broadband, infrastructure investments, job creation, strengthening cybersecurity, bolstering our health care workforces, and ensuring all our workers are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.

Our plenary sessions, speakers, task force meetings, and other scheduled convenings are an opportunity to share best practices, learn new approaches from one another, and explore new ways of doing business in our states. I know these three days will be both productive and enjoyable.

Our host, Governor Janet Mills, will showcase some of the best Maine has to offer: food, culture and perhaps Maine’s greatest attraction: the outdoors. I hope you, your family and your staff have an opportunity to sample at least one of these singular Maine experiences.

My chair’s initiative: K-12 Computer Science Education will not be “concluding” at our meeting, but entering a new phase where I will continue to work with all of you on ways to ensure every school and teacher is ready and able to prepare every student with the computer science skills that are in demand.

Before I pass the chairman’s gavel to NGA Vice Chair, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, I look forward to a series of important and illuminating sessions with some of the most insightful leaders our states have the good fortune to call Governor.

-Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson

Welcome to Maine – Governor Janet Mills

Fellow Governors, Family Members and Staff,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Portland, Maine for the 2022 National Governors Association Summer Meeting. After nearly two years, I am thrilled Maine is finally hosting this important meeting, which will feature sessions, panels, and speakers that address issues of common concern and that offer us the opportunity to build on our bipartisan relationships.

There is no question these past two years have been difficult for us and the people we serve. But, to quote a poem that feels true to Maine: good timber does not grow in ease, the stronger the wind, the tougher the trees. Today, we are stronger for the challenges we have confronted, and, as we come together over these next several days, we can celebrate the return of a much-needed sense of normalcy – for our people, our businesses, and our communities. And now, as we continue to recover and tackle the myriad challenges ahead, working with each other through NGA will allow us to learn new ideas and to share best practices from states and territories across the country.

While I know you are focused on the work at hand, I hope you will also spend some time enjoying “vacationland” while you are here. Whether that be a boat ride in Casco Bay, a hike up Bradbury Mountain, a visit to Portland Head Light, a stop in at one of our phenomenal small businesses, or a meal at one of our famed restaurants, Maine has so much to offer you.

Thank you again for visiting this place I am so proud to call home. I look forward to seeing you.

Governor Janet Mills
