Countering Violent Extremism

Jun 27, 2018

In August 2017, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office for Community Partnerships awarded NGA a two-year grant to assist states in countering violent extremism (CVE). Through this project, governors will be able to assist their localities prevent acts committed by violent extremists by sharing information and lessons learned from previous initiatives. This project will take a unique approach by not focusing on any specific violent extremist ideology. Rather, this challenge will be viewed through a violence prevention lens, which will allow states to leverage their deep experience and tool sets from the violence prevention arena.

To achieve this goal, NGA will develop a road map for states on how to counter violent extremism throughout their communities. NGA staff will consult with several government, private, academic and non-profit organizations to discuss how to frame the road map around violence prevention. Once a draft is completed, NGA will competitively select five states to pilot it.
