Cleaning Up America’s Nuclear Weapons Complex: 2019 Update for Governors

This guide, produced by the National Governors Association’s (NGA) Energy, Infrastructure & Environment team, outlines successes and challenges faced by states and DOE in cleaning up nuclear weapons waste created during the Cold War. It details successes across the weapons complex and at cleanup sites in 11 states that are members of NGA Solutions’ Federal Facilities Task Force (FFTF). Comprised of governor appointed representatives from states directly affected by the cleanup effort, the FFTF meets to discuss waste disposal progress, priorities and challenges with each other and DOE and to stay informed about technology, policy and budget developments. FFTF member states include Idaho, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. The report also examines the five priority issues of the Federal Facilities Task Force, which are: jointly setting funding priorities,  ensuring compliance with cleanup agreements, managing waste safely, improving communications and developing uniform emergency response communication protocols.
