The National Governors Association (NGA) provides assistance targeting the complete life-cycle of an administration—from election day through the final year in office. NGA Consulting focuses on the leadership and management of state government and on governor’s office operations, as well as a one-of-a-kind spouses’ program.

Chiefs Meetings: The office provides private work sessions during NGA’s Winter and Summer Meetings for chiefs of staff to meet with their counterparts and share ideas and innovations on timely issues. NGA Consulting frequently organizes a special convening for chiefs with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Seminars: Annual management seminars offer governors’ and spouses’ staff the chance to meet and share best practices and innovative approaches to managing their offices. There are no fees to attend and participants are responsible for their hotel and transportation costs

Leadership and Management Publications: Offers a wide variety of publications that provide detailed analyses of governor’s office operation models and state government leadership practices.

Research Assistance: The office offers short-term research to provide a comparative analysis of common state management and operational practices.

Listservs for Governors’ Chiefs and Senior Staff: Governors’ staff listservs provide a convenient forum to address issues of common concern.

Management Reviews and Retreats: Management reviews provide an objective, confidential analysis of the operation of a governor’s office. Our team can help design, organize and facilitate retreats and strategy sessions, whether for a combined governor’s office and cabinet retreat or smaller groups of sub-cabinets.

Transition Consultations: The office provides a full range of services and assistance for newly elected governors, governors facing a re-election year and governors departing office. These tailored consulting services focus either on organizing and operating the governor’s office or transitioning out of office.

NGA Governors’ Spouses’ Program: The NGA Spouses’ Program provides governors’ spouses with opportunities to share experiences, best practices and advice with colleagues about their unique roles and responsibilities during NGA’s Winter and Summer Meetings and an annual Spouses’ Seminar. Our team supports a six-member, bipartisan Spouses’ Leadership Committee that guides the governors’ spouses’ program and activities. The office also conducts an annual seminar for spouses’ assistants and executive residence managers.
