January Spotlight

Following the November gubernatorial elections, 10 new Governors were elected to office. Nearly all of the newly elected Governors have already taken the oath of office, and the remaining will take the oath of office later this month. Details about inaugurations can be found here, and NGA’s website provides biographies for the newly elected Governors and their spouses. NGA looks forward to working with the newly elected Governors and their staff members.

2025 Inaugurations & State of the State Addresses
Resource Available to Track Dates for Upcoming Inaugurations & State of the State Addresses
NGA maintains a resource to provide information about upcoming inauguration dates. NGA also maintains a resource to provide details about Governors’ upcoming inaugural addresses and state of the state, territory or commonwealth addresses, including the dates of the addresses. The information can be found here.
NGA will collect and share Governors’ 2025 addresses on NGA’s website to help showcase Governors’ leadership and priorities in the year ahead. Each year, NGA closely monitors Governors’ inaugural and state of the state addresses to help inform the organization’s overall communications strategy. NGA invites Governors’ offices to contact NGA’s communications team to share any dates or topics related to the upcoming addresses.
Save the Date: 2025 NGA Winter Meeting
2025 NGA Winter Meeting

NGA will host the 2025 Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C., February 20-22. Registration information will be shared soon. The meeting will be held at the Grand Hyatt Washington, D.C. for the next five years.
The NGA Winter Meeting is the most well-attended annual gathering of the nation’s Governors and serves as a forum for bipartisan coordination on pressing national issues. Each year’s agenda includes notable guest speakers and in-depth discussions on timely priorities like infrastructure, AI, disaster preparedness, workforce development, education and housing.
Recent Winter Meeting speakers included U.S. Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett, Cabinet secretaries, and business and tech leaders like Marc Andreessen and Jamie Dimon.

Governors Polis, Stitt Highlight Governors’ Work on Bipartisan Education Solutions
NGA Chair Colorado Governor Jared Polis and NGA Vice Chair Kevin Stitt wrote an opinion piece, published by The Ripon Forum, to highlight examples of how Governors work together on bipartisan education solutions. Read the piece here.

Governors Applaud Passage of Bipartisan Water Resources and Economic Development Legislation
NGA’s Economic Development and Revitalization Task Force Co-Chairs, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, released this statement after the House and Senate passed a legislative package to reauthorize the Water Resources Development Act and the Economic Development Administration.
Governors Call on Congress to Pass the A Stronger Workforce for America Act
NGA Education, Workforce and Community Investment Task Force Co-Chairs Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers released a statement urging Congress to pass the bipartisan A Stronger Workforce for America Act. Read the statement here.

NGA Remembers President Carter
NGA Chair Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Vice Chair Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt expressed their condolences on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. Read the statement here. President Carter served as Georgia’s 76th Governor. His official gubernatorial portrait is pictured.

Governor Newsom Shares Resource Detailing Ways to Support Californians Impacted by LA Fires
NGA joins with Americans across the country to send our thoughts and prayers to the people of California. Many states have been sending resources and personnel to help support in the fight against the fires in Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom has also shared this resource providing information about how people can volunteer time or donate money to support those impacted by the Los Angeles fires.
