Susan Hutchinson became the first lady of Arkansas when her husband, Governor Asa Hutchinson, was sworn in as governor on January 13, 2015.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Hutchinson grew up as the second of seven children. She was valedictorian of Fulton High School and attended Bob Jones University in South Carolina, where she met her husband, Governor Asa Hutchinson. After graduation, she taught biology and algebra in Memphis.
The first lady brings to the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion a lifetime of experience advocating for and working with children. Among other initiatives, Mrs. Hutchinson hopes to establish more Children’s Advocacy Centers in Arkansas and will advocate for more exposure to the arts for students in her state.
The Hutchinsons were married in 1973. They have four children and six grandchildren.
