Governors Commend Defense Dept. For National Guard Bonus Review

WASHINGTON—The National Governors Association (NGA) today released the following statement on the Pentagon’s decision to cease collecting National Guard enlistment bonus repayments:

“As leaders of the National Guard, governors commend Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s decision to suspend efforts to take back bonuses paid to Guardsmen and Guardswomen more than a decade ago.

Those men and women have served with honor and distinction, and they deserve a clear and fair system that will resolve any overpayment on behalf of the Pentagon in a manner that recognizes their service.

Governors will work with Congress and the Defense Department to ensure a fair, impartial review is conducted in a timely manner to ensure this situation is properly resolved.”
