Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat Discusses Google’s Investments in AI Training Programs
Washington, DC – NGA Chair Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt highlighted his Chair’s Initiative Reigniting the American Dream during the opening session of NGA’s Winter Meeting.
Gov. Stitt welcomed Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, for a conversation on investing in communities and preparing workers for the jobs of tomorrow.
“America’s story is one built on gritty ambition, where the future isn’t dictated by the circumstances of your birth but by what you’re willing to work hard to build,” said Gov. Stitt. “That spirit, the belief that opportunity is earned – not inherited – and that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, is the heartbeat of the United States of America.
“Reigniting the American dream is both core to Google’s mission and deeply personal for me. I am optimistic about the opportunity technology, specifically AI, presents to help deliver for everyone, everywhere across America. As with any technology, there are downside risks that need to be addressed – most notably about energy affordability and jobs. At the same time, it is equally important that people in every corner of each of your states feel the benefit to them in their lived experience and see firsthand why it is valuable in their lives, beyond the more abstracted and yet important questions around America’s geopolitical leadership.” said Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google.
Governor Stitt is launching new initiatives to support the goals of Reigniting the American Dream:
- Governors Youth Apprenticeship Program: This program will cultivate future state government talent by placing recent high school graduates in governors’ offices or executive branch agencies while they earn college credit toward a bachelor’s degree. The program will model high-quality workforce practices while building a pipeline of young talent to fill critical public-sector roles. The project was inspired by Gov. Stitt’s bipartisan delegation to Switzerland to study the world-renowned Swiss apprenticeship model.
- Governor’s Compact on Entrepreneurship: Gov. Stitt invited governors to join him in signing on to the compact, which sets out a variety of ways governors can make entrepreneurship a priority their states. The compact will culminate at NGA’s Summer Meeting in Oklahoma City, when Gov. Stitt will highlight governors’ actions to unleash generations of entrepreneurs.
