Governors Comment on Education Law Accountability Rule

WASHINGTON—The National Governors Association today released the following the U.S. Department of Education’s release of the final accountability rule under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):

“Today’s final rule on accountability addresses many of the concerns raised by governors after the U.S. Department of Education released a proposed rule earlier this year. The final rule represents a compromise that takes into account the needs of states and the civil rights community.

However, governors recognize and respect that the President-elect and new Congress may have a different vision for ESSA implementation. If so, governors plan to partner with them to ensure any alternative rules, regulations, guidance and enforcement of the law continue to balance state flexibility with educational equity.”
