NGA Comments on State and Local Tax Deduction

WASHINGTON—The National Governors Association (NGA) today released the following statement:

“NGA is the bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors, and a consensus-based process drives gubernatorial development of NGA’s policy guidelines. Its longstanding positions favor preservation of state and local tax deductibility (SALT).

This fall NGA affiliated with the Americans Against Double Taxation (AADT) Coalition through participation as a member of the “Big Seven” national organizations representing state and local elected and appointed officials that also support SALT preservation. However, NGA does not contribute financially to AADT operations and as such, does not participate in AADT’s tactical decision-making.

NGA was not consulted in advance and does not condone AADT’s recent tactical decisions on the SALT issue. Though NGA policy favors preservation of SALT, the organization is no longer affiliated with the AADT.
