NGA Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Murphy v. NCAA
The National Governors Association today released the following statement in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association (Nos. 16-476 and 16-477, consolidated)
WASHINGTON- Yesterday’s SCOTUS decision in Murphy v. NCAA championed a longstanding principle of the nation’s governors that federal action should respect state sovereignty when legislating or regulating activity in the states.
By overturning the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) the Court reaffirmed the Tenth Amendment. Governors believe that a strong, cooperative relationship between the states and federal governments is vital to best serve the interests of all people. The Court in Murphy agreed.
NGA applauds the Court’s decision and considers it an affirmation of the constitutional requirement for a healthy balance of power between the sovereign levels of government.
