About

ARNE H. CARLSON was born in the Bronx in New York City. He received a full scholarship to Choate High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1957, and attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota. He began his public service career as a member of the Minneapolis City Council from 1965 to 1967, serving as majority leader. From 1970 to 1978, he served in the Minnesota House of Representatives and was floor whip from 1974 to 1978. From 1978 to 1990 he served as state auditor for Minnesota. He was elected governor in 1990 and was reelected in 1994. In 1992, he received the Children’s Champion Award from the Minnesota Defense Fund and he was the only American official to be honored by the Audubon Society for his leadership in water quality issues.
