About

ROY E. BARNES was born in Mableton, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1969 and a law degree in 1972. After serving in the Cobb District Attorney’s office for two years, he was elected to the first of eight terms in the state senate. After two terms, he was named chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Barnes served as administration floor leader from 1982 through 1989. He also served on the Governor’s Growth Strategies Commission and was senate chairman of the Constitutional Revision Committee. Returning to the legislature in 1993 after a run for governor in 1990, he represented the 33rd house district. He served as vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee and as a member of the Rules and Banks and Banking Committees. He also was a senior partner in the law firm of Barnes, Browning, Tanksley, and Casurella in Marietta, Georgia.
