Alejandro Javier García Padilla was sworn in as governor of Puerto Rico on January 2, 2013.
García Padilla was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico, on August 3. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from the University of Puerto Rico and later received his juris doctor from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. García Padilla started his career working as a law clerk at Puerto Rico’s Court of Appeals. Later he worked as an attorney, specializing in property, estates, contracts and administrative law. He was also a law professor at the Interamerican University.
In 2005, García Padilla became the secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Consumer Affairs. In 2007, he resigned his position as secretary to run for the Senate of Puerto Rico. He was elected to the Senate in 2008 and was later chosen to serve as the ranking member on the Governmental Affairs, Public Safety and Judicial Affairs committees. García Padilla and his wife Wilma Pastrana have three children, Juan Pablo, Diego Alejandro and Ana Patricia.
