Dear Majority Leader McConnell, Speaker Pelosi, Democratic Leader Schumer, and Republican Leader McCarthy:

On behalf of the nation’s state and local government elected and appointed officials, we urge Congress to pass a turnkey, one-year extension of the current surface transportation law, Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, with increased investment levels, while also ensuring the solvency of the Highway Trust Fund for the duration of the extension.

As the owners and operators of 97% of the nation’s interconnected surface transportation systems, state and local governments know the importance of funding certainty for our country’s infrastructure. We appreciate and recognize the efforts of both United States Senate and United States House of Representatives to enact long-term reauthorizations of the FAST Act and look forward to continuing this work later this year. However, with the expiration of the FAST Act one week away, jobs, infrastructure projects and the safe and timely movement of freight are now at risk.

Thank you for your leadership in addressing these critical issues. We look forward to working with you to approve such legislation before September 30. Let us get it done together.

Sincerely,
